out of the ordinary
EdNerat designs and makes coats, by hand, to create sculptural shapes, flowing forms and simple silhouettes. Architected with care, our coat designs are informed by the elegance and experience of many wonderful women – by their desires and fears and forms.
Our coats are quiet; their shapes considered, their luxury restrained and their finish impeccable. Not ostentatious, but quite simply exceptional. They are cut to fit and to flatter the female form and are designed to be worn with insouciance – comfortably and happily.
In keeping with the hard work that has gone into them and the wide-ranging ambitions we have for them, our coats are all named after female British artists.
quiet elegance
We make coats, because warmth and pocketed practicality aside, coats are both transformational and protective: they can dramatically define us or demurely drape over us; they can sculpt us, shape us or re-shape us; they can dress us up or dress us down; they can embolden us or shelter us from an unwanted gaze.
We make coats because we can put them on and take them off at will and because they can remind us that our freedom to cover up is every bit as important as our hard-won liberty to uncover.
true rarity
Our coats are made from the finest British fabrics. With the exception of our light silks, which are sourced and cut here – but not made here – all our textiles are woven in the United Kingdom – in Cumbria, Yorkshire, Somerset, Suffolk and beyond.
We source our fabrics direct from makers in short lengths – many of which are often woven just for us. We also occasionally buy up exquisite deadstock and ravishing roll-ends from British makers and designers.
This way of working maximises choice and exclusivity for our wearers and enables us to make our coats out of an ever-changing array of textiles – supple tweeds and flannels, sumptuous silks, beautiful bouclés and bewitching brocades.
careful crafting
Each of our coats is carefully and individually cut by hand, stitched, tailored and finished in our London workshop. EdNerat’s labels are embroidered to order, in close proximity.
Our bespoke passementerie closures are woven to order for us in Norfolk and our care labels in Pembrokeshire. Our packaging is made for us by hand, by a brilliant family-owned box-maker in Woolwich; our seals and stamps are made in Essex and our sealing wax comes from Scotland.
We design, measure, model and photograph our coats in Wales and ship them from here through our trusted Postie.
close collaborations
In crafting our coats, we are privileged to work with the very finest of British makers – highly skilled tailors, patternmakers, cutters, weavers, embroiderers, seamsters and finishers.
By sourcing and making in the British Isles, we are able to collaborate closely with our suppliers and makers at every stage of production, from design and development through to fabrication.
As a result we can ensure that the quality of the materials and craftsmanship never falters, and that our coats are produced without any hidden costs, whether environmental or ethical.
proximate productions
Going the extra mile to do everything we can in the British Isles, we hope we can play a part – however small – in showcasing the fabulous fabrics that are made here and artistry that survives here, helping to sustain skills and to support the livings that depend on them. We know that we must do so now if current livelihoods are to survive and future generations are able to train with and succeed them. The cost of us not using them is bigger than we might imagine.
We trust that you will also feel proud to support these wonderful, talented people and the many small and family-owned businesses that we work with, while understanding that the cost of proximate production must also be reflected in price.
re-uses
As all makers do, we end up with short ends and scraps. The longer pieces we save for our mens' waistcoats at Weskit, the smaller pieces are made into the most beautiful padded coat-hangers for us by Anne in Risca.
We ship and print on recycled and recyclable card, cardboard and paper. Where we can, we re-use things, where we can't we compost them. Any customers wanting to return their packaging to us is welcome to; we will pay for the postage and re-use their boxes for storage, their ribbons for tying up samples, swatches and patterns and their tissue for our boots and bags!
lasting ambitions
Our ambitions are to make our customers look elegant and feel wonderful in much-loved coats, for our garments to last for years to come, our suppliers to enjoy collaborating with us and to do all this leaving the smallest environmental footprint possible. We pay fairly and waste as little as possible by making to order and recycling our short pieces.
We aim to do what we do well and to do more of it but, first and foremost, we are intent on making exquisite coats.

EdNerat is a family-owned business, based in Wales.
EdNerat was born from a single pair of hands fresh with the sense of touch, itching for practical purpose. It grew out of a yearning for singular, well-made coats and was nourished by many skilled hands and expert eyes; by careful craftsmanship, considered cutting, and delicate detailing.
EdNerat is made possible by true craftspeople in the British Isles.
