The Label on the Inside

There is a version of 'luxury' that announces itself before you have crossed the room. It lives on the outside of handbags, on the buckles of belts, on the buttons of jackets and the corners of scarves. It is there to be read by other people. It exists, in other words, not for the wearer but for the audience.

That version of luxury is enormously expensive to produce. Not because the things themselves are expensive to make — they frequently are not — but because maintaining the apparatus of desire around them costs a very great deal of money. The shows. The campaigns. The celebrity endorsements. The flagship stores on the most expensive streets in the world. The packaging. The parties. The influencers. In 2023, LVMH — the conglomerate that owns Louis Vuitton, Dior and Givenchy among others — spent over ten billion euros on advertising and promotion. That is roughly twelve percent of everything they earned. Italian investigators recently found that a Dior supplier was paid 53 euros to assemble an item retailing at over 2,500 euros. The gap between those two numbers is not profit. It is the cost of making you want it.

We are not that kind of luxury.

EdNerat coats are made entirely by hand in London, from fabrics woven almost entirely in the British Isles — tweeds, flannels, bouclés, brocades, linens many of them commission woven for us in short runs. They are cut, made and finished by skilled hands, here. They are sized from 6 to 20 and we offer fully bespoke sizing as a matter of course. They are made to last for years.

What they do not come with is a logo on the outside. Our label is on the inside. It is there for the wearer, not the room. Made from silk, embroidered in London, it sits softly against the wearer's neck — instead of screaming across the room.

Our prices reflect what it costs to make our coats here and well — in good cloth, by skilled hands, in Britain. They do not reflect the cost of shopfronts on Bond Street, or advertising campaigns, or parties, or influencers pirouetting in front of ever-present cameras. We don't do any of those things. We spend on fabric and fabrication.

This is, we think, a different kind of luxury. Not louder. Not more visible. Not accompanied by a ribbon-tied bag and a spray of scent at the door. But real in a way that the other kind, for all its noise, sometimes is not. The cloth is real. The making is real. The fit — adjusted to you, cut for you, altered if necessary until it is right — is real.

The woman who wears an EdNerat coat knows what she has. She doesn't need anyone else to read the label to know its worth. It's on the inside. Where it belongs.
